Renovation Projects

Whether it's renovating an entire house or a single wall, there are a lot of aspects to consider before getting started.

The first step in any renovation or plastering project is to survey the property and identify any potential problems, such as damp patches, holes and cracks. This step is particularly important if there are any health and safety concerns, such as asbestos. It may also be necessary to get rid of any existing plaster or cement render that's flaking or falling off the walls – this can be done by drilling holes through the plaster and then pouring in a combination of cement, water and sand. Or you could simply remove the old render altogether by chipping it away with a hammer and chisel.

Once you've removed any old render, you can start applying your Plasterer's render – this is a mixture made from a variety of materials, including cement and fine sand. You can apply this using a paint roller or trowel – the latter is favoured by professional plasterers. Once the render has been applied and has dried (this can take a couple of days), you can start applying your finish coat – these include paint or ceramics.

Norwich Plasterers Ltd have years of experience renovating properties. We can handle any job, regardless of size or complexity, no matter the time of year. This week, we’re looking at how we helped get David G’s renovation project off the ground.

When Norwich Plasterers first arrived, the property was in pretty bad shape. This meant a lot of plastering work was required to get the property ready for renovation.

To start off with, we waterproofed the ceilings in the kitchen and bathroom. This is one of the most common things we do for clients who are renovating an old property. After this, we stripped back all the old plastering and started from scratch with the surface preparation.

Because the building is listed, we needed to preserve the original structure and brickwork as much as possible, which means that the walls were to be covered internally with plasterboard and externally with render.

An additional task was to replace the roof and address issues like damp and rot. We also identified some problems with the chimney, in particular, the flue tiles. We were able to give David an estimate on what needed to be done to the chimney stack, prior to getting a view from the roofers.

With the foundations beautifully rendered and finished, David's project was ready for the next steps. We can't wait to see the finished property.
